WHAT IS IT?

A continuous ECG for real-world heart rhythm monitoring

A standard ECG (electrocardiogram) in the clinic records your heart’s electrical activity for a matter of seconds — plenty for many purposes, but not always enough to catch heart rhythm problems that come and go. Palpitations, skipped beats, dizziness or fainting spells are often intermittent, and if they don’t happen to occur during those few seconds in the clinic, a standard ECG can look completely normal.

A Holter monitor solves this by recording continuously. It’s a small, lightweight device connected to a few electrodes placed on your chest, worn for an extended period — typically 24 to 48 hours — while you go about your normal daily activities, including exercise and sleep. Every heartbeat during that window is recorded, giving your GP a far greater chance of capturing whatever irregularity is causing your symptoms.

Holter monitoring is commonly used to help investigate palpitations, unexplained dizziness or fainting, to check how well a heart condition is being managed, or to assess heart rhythm after certain cardiac events or procedures.

Quick Overview

KEY BENEFITS

Why continuous monitoring matters

Catches Intermittent Events

Extended recording dramatically increases the chance of capturing an irregular heartbeat as it actually happens.

Links Symptoms to Rhythm

You can log exactly when palpitations, dizziness or other symptoms occur, so they can be matched to the recording.

Non-Invasive & Safe

No needles, no radiation — just electrodes on the skin and a small recorder you carry with you.

Captures Day & Night Activity

Records your heart during exercise, rest and sleep — periods a brief clinic visit simply can't observe.

Guides Next Steps

Clear findings help your GP decide whether reassurance, medication, or cardiologist referral is the right path.

Supports Ongoing Monitoring

Useful for checking how an existing heart condition or treatment is being managed over time.

HOW IT WORKS

What to Expect

1

Initial Consultation

Your GP discusses your symptoms — palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or another concern — and decides whether Holter monitoring is appropriate.
2

Fitting the Monitor

A handful of small electrodes are attached to your chest and connected to a lightweight recorder, worn on a strap or clipped to your clothing. Fitting takes around 10–15 minutes and is painless.
3

Wearing It Day-to-Day

Continue your normal routine — work, light exercise, sleep. You may be asked to keep a simple diary noting the time of any symptoms you experience.
4

Returning the Device

Come back to the clinic once the monitoring period is complete to have it removed and the recording downloaded.
5

Results & Follow-Up

Your GP reviews the recording, explains the findings, and discusses next steps — which may include a specialist cardiology referral if needed.

FAQS

Common Questions

This depends on the specific device used — some are water-resistant, others aren’t. Your GP or the fitting nurse will let you know exactly what’s safe for your monitor.
Not significantly. Most people continue work, light exercise and normal routines as usual. Strenuous activity or contact sport may need to be avoided — we’ll advise based on your situation.
That’s still useful information. A symptom-free recording can help rule out certain causes, and your GP may recommend a longer monitoring period or a different test if needed.
In most cases, no — your Prohealth GP can organise Holter monitoring directly as part of your consultation.
Once the monitor is returned, your GP will typically review the recording and discuss it with you within a few business days.
