WHAT IS IT?

Re-training the muscles that support your bladder, bowel and core

Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles that form a supportive “hammock” at the base of your pelvis. They help control your bladder and bowel, support your pelvic organs, and contribute to core stability and sexual function. Like any muscle group, they can become weak or hard to control — after childbirth, with age, following pelvic surgery, or through years of strain — and that can show up as leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise, or a sudden urgent need to get to the toilet.

EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) therapy uses controlled, low-level electrical impulses to prompt the pelvic floor muscles to contract. For people who find it hard to identify or “find” these muscles on their own, this can help them become aware of the muscles and build strength and tone over a course of sessions, alongside the pelvic floor exercises that are generally the first-line approach for pelvic floor concerns.

It is a non-surgical option and can be used by both women and men. It isn’t a stand-alone cure-all — it’s one tool within a broader plan that your GP will tailor to you, which may also include pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle changes, or referral to a continence physiotherapist or specialist where appropriate.

Quick Overview

KEY BENEFITS

How EMS therapy can support your pelvic floor

Helps You Find the Muscles

Stimulation prompts the right muscles to contract, which can help if you struggle to feel or isolate them yourself.

Non-Surgical Approach

A conservative option that doesn't involve surgery, incisions or an operating theatre.

Supports Strength & Tone

Aims to improve muscle strength and control over a course of sessions, as part of your overall plan.

Fits Around Your Life

Sessions are scheduled in-clinic with minimal to no downtime between appointments.

For Women & Men

Pelvic floor concerns affect people of all genders — your GP will tailor the approach to you.

Part of a Broader Plan

Works alongside pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle advice and specialist referral where appropriate.

HOW IT WORKS

What to Expect

1

Consultation & Assessment

Your GP talks through your symptoms and history in a private setting, screens for anything that would make EMS unsuitable, and confirms whether it’s a good fit.

2

Personalised Treatment Plan

You’ll agree on a plan — including how many sessions are recommended, what to expect, and what you can do at home between visits.
3

Your EMS Session

During each in-clinic session, the EMS device delivers gentle, controlled stimulation that causes the pelvic floor muscles to contract. Intensity is adjusted to keep you comfortable.
4

Complete Your Course

Sessions are typically spaced over a number of weeks. You’ll be encouraged to keep up pelvic floor exercises alongside treatment to support your results.
5

Review & Next Steps

Your GP reviews your progress with you and discusses next steps — maintenance, further treatment, or referral to a continence physiotherapist or specialist if needed.

It depends on your symptoms, goals and how your body responds. Your GP will recommend a course during your consultation and review it as you progress.

Pelvic floor weakness can affect anyone, including men — for example after prostate surgery. Your GP will advise on whether EMS is appropriate for your situation.
Many people look at pelvic floor treatment after childbirth, but timing matters. Your GP will assess your recovery and advise when it’s appropriate to begin.
Rebate eligibility depends on your circumstances and cover. Our reception team can confirm current costs and any applicable rebate when you book your consultation.
