WHAT IS IT?

Blood pressure, measured the way it actually behaves

A single blood pressure reading taken in the clinic is a snapshot — and blood pressure can rise simply because of the stress of being at the doctor’s (“white coat hypertension”), or look normal in the clinic while running high the rest of the day (“masked hypertension”). Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) removes that guesswork.

ABPM uses a small, portable monitor connected to a cuff on your upper arm. Over a full 24-hour period, it automatically inflates and records your blood pressure at regular intervals — roughly every 20–30 minutes during the day and every 30–60 minutes overnight — while you go about your normal routine, including sleep. The result is a detailed, real-world profile of how your blood pressure moves throughout the day, rather than a single number.

This is particularly useful for confirming a diagnosis of high blood pressure (hypertension), checking whether current medication is working effectively at all times of day, and identifying patterns — such as blood pressure that doesn’t dip overnight as it normally should — that can be clinically significant.

Quick Overview

KEY BENEFITS

Why ABPM gives a clearer picture than a single reading

More Accurate Diagnosis

Reduces the chance of over- or under-diagnosing hypertension based on a single in-clinic reading.

Reveals Overnight Patterns

Captures how your blood pressure behaves while you sleep — a key indicator your GP can't otherwise see.

Guides Treatment Decisions

Gives your GP objective data to fine-tune medication type, dose or timing where needed.

Identifies White-Coat & Masked Hypertension

Distinguishes clinic-only high readings from genuinely elevated blood pressure, and vice versa.

Minimal Disruption

You keep working, resting and sleeping as normal — the monitor does the rest.

Supports Long-Term Heart Health

Well-managed blood pressure is one of the most important factors in reducing cardiovascular risk over time.

HOW IT WORKS

What to Expect

1

Initial Consultation

Your GP discusses your symptoms or blood pressure history and determines whether ABPM is the right next step for you.
2

Fitting the Monitor

A cuff is fitted to your upper arm and connected to a small recording device worn on a belt or shoulder strap. Fitting takes around 15 minutes and is completely painless.
3

Wearing It for 24 Hours

Go about your normal day — work, errands, sleep. The monitor automatically takes readings at set intervals; you may be asked to keep a short diary of activity or symptoms.
4

Returning the Device

Come back to the clinic the next day to have the monitor removed and the data downloaded.
5

Results & Follow-Up

Your GP reviews the full 24-hour profile with you and discusses next steps — whether that’s reassurance, a medication adjustment, or further investigation.

FAQS

Common Questions

Most patients find it a minor inconvenience rather than uncomfortable. The cuff inflates firmly for a few seconds at each reading, including occasionally overnight, which can briefly interrupt sleep.
The monitor isn’t waterproof, so showering is best done before fitting or after it’s removed. Light normal activity is fine and, in fact, part of the point — try to keep your day as usual, though we’ll advise on anything strenuous.
In most cases, no separate referral is needed — your Prohealth GP can arrange ABPM directly during a consultation.
Once the monitor is returned and the data downloaded, your GP will typically discuss your results with you at a follow-up appointment — usually within a few business days.
Rebate eligibility depends on your individual circumstances. Our reception team can confirm current costs and any applicable rebate when you book.
